Diagnostic Endobronchial Ultrasound: Dr. Rohan is highly experienced in performing EBUS, a minimally invasive procedure that helps diagnose and stage lung cancer and lymphoma, and detects infections and other diseases. It can be performed under moderate or general anesthesia, and inserts a small, ultrasound enabled endoscope into the windpipe through the mouth. A pathologist in the operating room can process and examine any obtained biopsy samples on the spot, allowing for speedy diagnosis.
Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery Lobectomy: Another minimally invasive procedure is a VATS lobectomy, which is offered for patients with early stage lung cancer and patients with certain pneumonia infections or chest tumors. In this roughly two hour procedure, Dr. Rohan makes several small incisions to access the patient’s chest cavity, and removes masses close to the patient’s lung to be tested for cancer, without breaking or spreading ribs. The patient usually needs a hospital stay of one to three days, with a total recovery time of three to four weeks.
Patients who need to undergo chemotherapy after the VATS procedure can begin much sooner, which can lead to better outcomes.
Minimally Invasive Surgery: Dr. Rohan performs minimally-invasive procedures that cause reduced pain, less hemorrhaging and have quicker recovery times compared to traditional, open surgeries.
Dr. Rohan is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. He was a fellow in cardiothoracic surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New Hyde Park, N.Y. He earned his degree in medicine from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Miami, Fla and completed his surgical residency and internship at Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Mass. He was a William J. von Leibig Fellow with the Longwood Vascular Surgery Research Training Program/NRSA at Beth-Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School in Boston.
