What is a colonoscopy?

Colonoscopy is one way a physician performs a colorectal screening. The physician, in this procedure, uses a scope to view the inside of the colon in the body. In some instances, the physician will remove polyps through this scope. If the physician removes areas, such as a polyp, these materials will be sent to a laboratory for further study.

During the colonoscopy, the patient is given an anesthesia called conscious sedation – this form of anesthesia keeps the patient comfortable. The conscious sedation will not put him or her to sleep completely, however, as with any type of medication given for sedation, the patient will need someone else to drive him or her home after the colonoscopy.
