Occupational Therapy

therapist and patientAfter a stroke, trauma, fracture, or other medical complication, an individual’s overall functional mobility may be impaired. One may experience difficulty getting in and out of bed, walking, and even performing activities of daily living such as getting washed, dressed and other self-care functions.

Occupational Therapy at HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley offers inpatient and outpatient occupational services, which work to improve an individual’s flexibility, strength, balance and ability to perform activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing.

Before receiving occupational therapy, each patient receives a thorough evaluation by a licensed occupational therapist. The occupational therapist assesses a patient’s functional abilities and develops a treatment program specifically designed for him or her. This way, every patient receives the type of treatment geared toward reaching the goals set by them and their therapist.

Our inpatient therapy team is comprised of highly qualified occupational therapists trained to evaluate and treat an individual’s impairments while in the hospital. The goal is to maximize functional independence. Recommendations will be made for possible equipment, as well as collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to determine discharge needs and options.

Outpatient Occupational Therapy services benefit children and adults who are living at home but require hands-on interventions to address physical or cognitive impairments in order to achieve his or her highest potential.  The Occupational Therapist assesses your current limitations in movement and function and designs a treatment plan based on your unique needs and goals. We may use manual techniques, standardized tasks and functional activities to facilitate greater independence in, and satisfaction with, daily activities. The Occupational Therapist may also recommend specialized equipment, home modifications or strategies to compensate for chronic impairments.

Occupational Therapists in the Outpatient setting further specialize in conditions of the upper extremity that may affect movement, strength or coordination of the arm, wrist and hand.

Some diagnoses and conditions that may be treated in Outpatient Occupational Therapy may include (but are not limited to):
