The Hospitalist Service of HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley provides a highly skilled team of physicians specially trained in the delivery of inpatient care. HealthAlliance hospitalists are board-certified healthcare providers in diverse medical specialties who have additional training or experience in caring for hospitalized patients.
Hospitalists focus on providing quality medical care to hospitalized patients, 24 hours a day, seven days per week. From the time a patient is admitted to the time the patient is discharged, our hospitalists work closely and communicate with the patient, their family members, primary care physician and any necessary specialists involved to provide coordinated, seamless care.
Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are also an integral part of the Hospitalist Service. Nurse practitioners work in collaboration with hospitalist physicians. Physician assistants practice under the supervision of hospitalist physicians. NP’s and PA’s take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and X-rays, and diagnose and treat conditions.
Why Have Hospitalists?

Research shows that hospitalists reduce the length of stay and patient treatment costs. In addition, hospitalists are leaders on several quality-improvement initiatives in key clinical areas, including transitions of care, co-management of patients, reducing hospital-acquired conditions and optimizing the care of patients.
Hospitalists provide inpatient care in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort. This makes care more efficient for patients and their primary care doctors. For years, physicians cared for patients in their offices, and then juggled their schedules to travel to the hospital to check on any patients they had admitted.
Hospitalists, by contrast, see no non-hospitalized patients, nor do they continue caring for hospitalized patients after they leave the hospital. But they communicate closely with your primary care or other physician at admission, during your hospital stay and at discharge to ensure the primary care physician is engaged in planning your care in the hospital.
