KINGSTON, N.Y. (December 13, 2016) – HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), has received $500,000 in economic and community development funding through New York state's Mid-Hudson Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative.
The award was provided for the co-location of the HealthAlliance Medical Simulation Center and Learning Laboratory in the 6,500-square-foot ambulatory center at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston. This project was one of 950 across the state receiving a total of $716.9 million in awards.
Announced as part of WMCHealth's five-year, $133.6 million healthcare project that will transform the delivery of healthcare in Kingston and its surrounding communities, HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus will be redeveloped into a medical village – a neighborhood focal point providing advanced, easy access to the finest conventional and integrative health services. Plans are already well in the works for community partners to offer primary care, behavioral health and other support services and for HealthAlliance to offer a new Outpatient Center for Rehabilitative Care and other facilities. The HealthAlliance Medical Simulation Center and Learning Laboratory will be an educational component of the medical village.
"This funding will help establish the simulation center and learning laboratory and enable us to provide the latest technology to HealthAlliance clinicians and local students in order for them to gain the advanced skills and higher education they will need to provide exceptional care, right here in our community," said HealthAlliance President and CEO David Scarpino. "We want our own community members working at HealthAlliance, and that starts by bringing education to them."
The HealthAlliance Medical Simulation Center will be a state-of-the-art medical-training facility for current and future healthcare professionals. It will enable 18 students to perform medical procedures virtually and experience interactive clinical settings.
The HealthAlliance Medical Simulation Center is envisioned to include:
- Life-size, high-tech mannequins that physiologically respond to treatment similar to real-life patients
- Lifelike, anatomical models, to help learners develop confidence and proficiency in specific medical tasks
- Actors who portray the personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics and everyday concerns of actual patients
- Computerized simulation to teach anatomy and surgical procedures
The center's main goal is to improve safety in patient care. Current and future healthcare professionals will hone skills and refine advanced techniques vital to meeting the gold standards in patient safety and clinical outcomes set at HealthAlliance and affiliated WMCHealth facilities.
