Midwives Elizabeth Pickett, MS, LM, and Barbara Smith-Foy, MS, LM, Join Advanced OB-GYN Associates in Kingston to Run Prenatal Care

news item

Advanced OB-GYN Associates, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), welcomes midwives Elizabeth Pickett, MS, LM, and Barbara Smith-Foy, MS, LM, to the practice’s Kingston office, led by Dean Bloch, MD, Chairman of the HealthAlliance Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The Kingston practice is Advanced OB-GYN Associates’ first comprehensive midwifery practice caring for patients throughout pregnancy, as both outpatients and inpatients.

Midwife-assisted deliveries are well established in improving maternal-fetal outcomes, reducing cesarean section and episiotomy rates, and increasing patient satisfaction.

Beyond prenatal care, Pickett and Smith-Foy care for women collaboratively with Dr. Bloch throughout the women’s life cycle, from adolescence through menopause. Their approach encompasses the physical, emotional, spiritual, sexual and cultural aspects of each woman they treat.

Pickett and Smith-Foy both received master’s degrees in midwifery from Philadelphia University, now known as Thomas Jefferson University. They both have practiced in and around the Hudson Valley for 10 years.

Pickett, of New Paltz, was most recently a full-scope midwife practicing in Kingston for Hudson River Healthcare of Peekskill, providing obstetrical and gynecological care for women, including high-risk patients, in all stages of life. Smith-Foy, of Red Hook, was most recently a certified nurse midwife at Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, providing full-scope midwifery and serving as a first assistant during cesarean sections.

The midwives are widely known for tailoring their care to each woman’s needs. Their model of care includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological and social well-being of each patient, including during the childbearing cycle.
  • Providing each patient with individual education, counseling, prenatal care, hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum care.
  • Shared decision-making with the patient and providing anticipatory guidance to make the best plan-of-care decisions and to optimize each woman’s health.

The supportive care Pickett and Smith-Foy provide during labor and delivery takes place at HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus in Kingston, also a member of WMCHealth and the only designated “Baby-Friendly” birth facility between Westchester County and Albany.

The Broadway Campus is also one of the few U.S. hospitals offering nitrous oxide for pain relief in labor as well as epidural anesthesia, hydrotherapy, water births and spinal blocks.

The Family Birth Place obstetrics unit on the campus moreover features WMCHealth’s new neonatal telemedicine program for high-acuity neonatology needs, such as resuscitation assistance.

Advanced OB-GYN Associates’ Kingston office is located at the Broadway Medical Pavilion, 373 Broadway. Its phone number is 845.303.1132. The HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus address is 396 Broadway. The Family Birth Place phone number is 845.331.3131, ext. 2241.
